Toward Intelligent Interconnect Fabrics

Progress in computation and communication is increasingly bottlenecked by integrated circuit 1/0. A huge diversity of links arise between chips, and overdesigning transmitter and receiver circuits to meet worst-case conditions incurs a heavy power penalty. Thus, continued progress will require dynamic and intelligent reconfigurability of all link parameters including data rate, modulation format, transceiver termination, equalization, DSP resolution and circuit supply voltages and biasing. In pursuit of.this vision, we are researching methods for physical-layer transceivers to communicate and co-ordinate autonomously, and on discrete multitone modulation that permits fine-grain optimization of each link's performance.
Prof. Tony Chan Carusone has taught and researched integrated circuits and systems at the University of Toronto since completing his Ph.D. there in 2002. He and his graduate students have received seven best-paper awards at leading conferences for their work on chip-to-chip and optical communication circuits, analog-to-digital conversion, and precise clock generation. Prof. Chan Carusone was a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society, an Associate Editor for the Journal of Solid-State Circuits, and currently serves on the Technical Program committee of ISSCC. He is a co-author of the textbooks "Analog Integrated Circuit Design," and the 8th edition of "Microelectronic Circuits," the bestselling electronics text of all time.
