Weekly Memo

Dear members of the Hajim School community:

It was a pleasure seeing all of you at the engineering social on Friday. I’m happy to see how popular they have become, and I hope they will continue to engender a spirit of community within the school. If you have any suggestions for future socials, or are part of a group that might want to serve as host, please contact Sandra Turner, in my office, at Sandra.turner@rochester.edu.

As many of you heard at the social, we are looking for enthusiastic and creative students with a background in multimedia (especially video production and radio production) to document some of the interesting and fun things going on around the Hajim School. The creators of the videos that we end up using will be paid for their work. And the effort is not limited to things that are already going on around campus –creative and motivated students are encouraged to think outside of the box and engage in cool engineering projects that they can document. If you are interested in applying, please contact Alan Blank, a press officer in the Office of Communications, at alan.blank@rochester.edu.

Kelly Johnson will be bringing several engineering students to visit a local company, New Scale Technologies, in Victor, NY on Monday, Oct. 11 (this is Columbus Day, so students don’t have classes).  The group will arrive at 10 a.m.  Employees will provide an overview for about an hour, and then from 11 a.m. to noon they will open the floor for questions.  It's a great opportunity to see new technologies being created in a professional setting and to make some connections.  We are hoping to bring between 10 and 20 students and faculty or staff members if any want to join us.  We are also going to be needing drivers, so any students or staff willing to provide transportation will be reimbursed for fuel.  The company makes engineering equipment that applies to almost every branch of engineering we offer here.  Here is the link to their website: http://www.newscaletech.com. Any questions can be directed to Kelly at (585) 275-3954 or kelly.johnson@rochester.edu.

And here is another opportunity for students who are interested in green technologies. Through an alumni connection, Hajim School students will be able to apply early for a variety of summer internships with General Motors’ Fuel Cell Activities in Honeoye Falls. There are a variety of positions available that are geared for chemical, mechanical, and electrical and computer engineering students which will provide excellent opportunities to design, develop, and test cutting-edge fuel cell technologies. The application deadline is coming up on Sept. 30. See our Hajim Facebook page for more detailed information on how to apply online.

Sincerely,

Robert L. Clark
