Weekly Memo

Dear members of the Hajim School community:

I would like to share an exciting community opportunity that has been a signature event here at the University of Rochester for a number of years. Volunteers are needed on Sunday, December 4 to assist with the Finger Lakes FIRST LEGO League Championship Tournament in Goergen Athletic Center. Teams of youth aged 9-14 will be competing with custom-built LEGO robots. To volunteer visit the event webpage click "Volunteers Welcome!" Login to the “2011 FLFLL database” (user name: Volunteer, Password: 2011) and complete the form. This is an excellent opportunity to mentor and encourage future engineers so I hope to see many of you participating!

I would like to congratulate Stephen Roessner, a first year PhD student in ECE who received a Grammy Award for his work on a recording: Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (without Orchestra) - 2010  "Messiaen: Livre Du Saint-Sacrement" (Paul Jacobs). Stephen represents the final piece of a departmental “trifecta” following George Borchukov (BS EE) who won an Oscar for special effects on “The Matrix” in 2000 and Mehmet Kemal Özkan (PhD EE) who won an Emmy for his contribution to U.S. digital TV standards in 1997. Congratulations Stephen!

I would also like to extend my congratulations to several Hajim School student athletes. Ellen Coleman (BME), Beth Martens (ME), and Rachel Wesley (CS) have recently been named All-UAA honorees for their play during the 2011 women’s soccer season. Beth was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District team. In men’s swimming and diving, Elliott Lasher (ME) broke a five-year-old record on the three-meter board and Christian Vu (BME) won the 200 freestyle. Congratulations to everyone!

Some more exciting news I’d like to share, the master’s degree program in Technical Entrepreneurship and Management (TEAM) recently received the 2011 Award for Excellence in Specialty Entrepreneurship Education, presented to the University’s Center for Entrepreneurship by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers during its annual conference.

Lastly, there are a number of exciting scholarship opportunities available for students that I encourage you to check out. Details are posted on the Hajim School facebook group regularly, so I invite you to join if you have not already.

Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!
