Weekly Memo

Dear members of the Hajim School community:

I would like to start by congratulating Riccardo Betti, professor of mechanical engineering and physics and Amit Goyal, a masters and PhD alumnus of material science on being named winners of the 2011 Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award. Riccardo and Amit received this high honor for their outstanding contributions in research and development supporting the Department of Energy and its missions. This is a tremendous honor and I am so proud of Riccardo and Amit for their accomplishments!

I would also like to congratulate Trevor DeVisser (ME), David DeLong (ME), and Edmond Boullianne (ME) who competed in the annual Cornell University Invitational Drill Competition as members of the Rochester NROTC Battalion. The Midshipmen of Rochester’s Battalion (composed of UR, RIT, and SUNY Brockport students) took third overall in drill events and first overall in athletic events against such notable military institutions as West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy. Good work Trevor, David, and Edmond for representing Rochester, the UR, and the Hajim School so strongly!

Even though we are heading into winter – as evidenced by the flurries last week – I encourage you to begin making plans for the upcoming summer. There is a multitude of options including internships, study abroad programs, summer courses, and other opportunities to augment your educational experience and help jumpstart your career after graduation. Details on many of these opportunities can be found on the Hajim School Facebook group, the Career Connection Blog, and the Center for Study Abroad Programs site. I encourage you to explore the possibilities and get a jump-start on the process even though summer seems so far away.

As always, have a great week and please alert us to any news that we can share with the Hajim School Community!

Sincerely,

Robert L. Clark
Professor and Dean
