Weekly Memo

Dear members of the Hajim School community:

I would like to start by congratulating James Fienup, the Robert E. Hopkins Professor of Optics on being elected to the National Academy of Engineering for his work in the development and application of phase retrieval algorithms. This is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer and I am so proud to see one of our professors being honored. Good work James!

I am also pleased to announce that Professor Mark Bocko has agreed to serve a 3-year term as Chair of ECE. His appointment will begin on Monday, 13 February 2012. I'd like to thank Philippe Fauchet again for his many years of service to the University of Rochester and his recent service as Chair of ECE.

National Engineers Week is an annual event to raise public awareness of engineers and the work they do. During the week of February 19-24, many exciting events will be held on campus as the Hajim School joins thousands of engineers around the country in recognition of the industry. For event details, e-trivia, & prizes, check out the Hajim School undergrad site and follow the Hajim School facebook page!

The Mechanical Engineering department ASME club will be holding review sessions in the weeks leading up to the FE Exam in April. These sessions will be led by department professors with one topic being covered each Tuesday,1:00 P.M. - 2:00 P.M. in Hopeman 224. If you have signed up to take the exam, I strongly encourage you to attend these sessions. Snacks and drinks will be provided. If you have any questions, feel free to email Susana Acosta.

Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society is also offering free engineering tutoring in upstairs ITS from 2-4pm on Sundays and 5-7pm on Mondays. They offer help with a variety of engineering classes and prerequisite classes and welcome students to come by with questions.

Be sure to send any news along to me and as always, have a great week everyone!

Sincerely,

Robert L. Clark
