Weekly Memo

Dear members of the Hajim School community:

Looking ahead this summer – and yes, we still have some weeks left – Professor Chunlei Guo, of The Institute of Optics, will host the 8th International Conference on Photo-Excited Processes and Applications August 12-17 here on campus. With a 20-year history, ICPEPA is one of the best topical meetings in the field of laser-materials interactions. Next month, UR will provide a forum for scientists from 20 countries to interact and to exchange their latest findings. More than 100 papers will be presented, and conference proceedings will be published in a special issue of Applied Physics B. The 6-day event will be based in Goergen Hall, with sessions in lecture hall 101 and Munnerlyn Atrium. Members of the University community are cordially invited to attend. For more information, visit http://www.optics.rochester.edu/icpepa8/index.html.

Secondly, I’d like to share this University-wide offering, as it may be of interest to those in the Hajim School community. Alumni Relations is teaming up with “higher education evangelist” John Hill from the networking site LinkedIn to host a free webinar exclusively for UR. Director of Alumni Relations-Engagement Anne Shields shared some context: “LinkedIn is well known for its ability to help you network and maintain relationships with professional contacts. However, many LinkedIn users skim the surface of what this professional networking tool can do to enhance your ability to find and connect with colleagues and potential business partners. Now, through a special partnership with LinkedIn, you will be able to gain access to exclusive content to help propel your career to the next level.” The event, starting at 1 p.m. this Friday, August 3, will cover: creating a profile that gets you noticed, developing tailored invitations, searching for alumni and prospective employers, using the service to identify market trends, and more. A question-and-answer session will follow. Registration is required; to sign up, go to http://www.rochester.edu/alumnievents.

Finally, the Hajim School family just got bigger by one. Proud father Tony Green, who works in my office as the school’s Director of Finance & Administration, took no time to announce to us the birth of his daughter Audra. She arrived around 4:30 this morning, July 30, weighing 8 pounds, 1 ounce, and measuring 21 inches. Tony says both baby and mom Liz are doing great. Happy birthday, little Audra.

Let’s meet back here in a week. And for now, go make the most of these final moments of July.
