Weekly Memo

May 27, 2014

Dear members of the Hajim School community:

Kari Brick joins us June 16 as the new Graduate Program Coordinator at The Institute for Optics. Kari comes to us from Binghamton University where she has been a resident director. She previously worked at Canisius College in the Office of Graduate Admissions, and as an international peer mentor and interim director of community service. She was also an academic mentor at Buffalo State College. I'd like to extend a warm welcome to Kari!

Congratulations to Engin Ipek, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and of Computer Science, who has been selected to receive the 2014 IEEE TCCA Young Computer Architect Award "in recognition of outstanding research contributions for computer architectures that leverage emerging technologies." The award will be presented next month.

Congratulations as well to Patrice Tankam, a postdoctoral research associate in Prof. Jannick Rolland's group at The Institute of Optics. Patrice has received a travel award from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology to attend the 2014 Postdoctoral Preparation Institute Workshop next month in Bethesda, MD. The program helps prepare postdocs to transition into academic positions.

Wendi Heinzelman, Dean of Graduate Studies and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, recently visited the USS Carl Vinson, a Navy aircraft carrier. She came back with some interesting insights about the applications of engineering and the importance of teamwork that tied in very nicely with our recent diploma ceremony. You can read her comments to our graduates here.

Thanks to the members of our Dean's Advisory Committee who joined me in Chicago for our spring meeting. Stuart Elby '82 Optical Engineering and Scott Pomerantz '81, '83 MBA Simon School are the newest members of the committee, which includes 17 very talented people whose sage counsel is invaluable to the Hajim School. Stuart is Vice President and Chief Technologist of Verizon Labs and Scott is Senior Vice President and General Manager for the Wireless Connectivity Combo (WCC) business unit at Broadcom Corp. John Bruning is stepping aside as chairman of the committee after serving well in that capacity, but will remain a member; John Major will take over as chairman. My heartfelt thanks to both.

As always, keep me updated and have a great week.

Sincerely,

Robert L. Clark
Professor and Dean
