ASML—Laser Machining Expert


ASML is seeking an senior engineer with expertise and knowledge in material science, physics or chemistry to investigate, design and manufacturing process solution for ultra-high precision optics and glass /ceramics products used in ASML’s Lithography products. This person will join the Optical Sensor and Metrology Department in Wilton, Connecticut. The main job function is to understand the existing machining, ablation and etching systems/process, to extend/improve its capability and to solve challenging engineering problems associated with achieving nanometer scale precision.

Job Description

The main focus of this position will be:

  • Understand the existing Laser machining/ablation systems and techniques to extend/improve the wear, roughness and friction performance of ceramics by making appropriate material, process and equipment choices
  • Investigate, material and chemical issues in bonding, gluing, coating and etching process
  • Solve any engineering challenges that we encounter related to chemical and material aspects of design and manufacturing process of optical and ceramic substrates to achieve the precision and life time performance at sub-nanometer scale
  • Investigate material issues/challenges using appropriate material diagnostic tools like SEM, AFM, WLI etc
  • Set-up and operate Laser machining/ablation, etching and other optical/ceramic manufacturing equipment for engineering experiments and process development
  • Understanding and link the manufacturing process steps and equipment settings effects to the performance of ASMLs systems at customer
  • Clearly communicate progress and status of ongoing technical activities to senior management
  • Support preparation of design reviews for the development team
  • Prepare engineer documentation like Element Performance Specifications, Element Design Specifications, Test Performance Specification; Test Analysis Reports and release the documents by following change control process
  • Write engineering procedure and train technicians to efficiently transfer the build/alignment and test process to manufacturing


Minimum: BS with at least 8-10 year of industry experience in material sciences, chemistry, physics or other engineering disciplines

Preferred: Masters with 5 years of industry experience or Phd with 2 years of industry experience in material sciences, physics, chemistry or other engineering disciplines


  • Extensive experience working with laser machining/ablation systems, lapping, electrical discharge machining (EDM) etc on optical/ceramic substrates
  • Excellent Knowledge of electro-optical, mechanical properties of coatings and ceramic structure
  • Experiencing in using etching equipment like Reactive Ion Etch, wet etch and acid etching
  • Good understanding and experience in verification methods (white light interferometer, microscope, SEM, AFM , TOF-SIMS, XPS etc)
  • Expert knowledge of MATLAB and/or LabVIEW for data collection and analysis to drive solutions
  • Working knowledge of PID controllers
  • Ability to work in the clean room environment knowledge in material and material interaction (especially glass, ceramics, thin film materials, gases, etc) with deep understanding of the fundamentals of friction and wear processes of metallic, ceramic, and polymeric materials
  • General understanding of optics and ceramic manufacturing methods
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing process optimization
  • Excellent analytical and experimental skills

The Optical Sensor and Metrology Department in ASML Wilton, Connecticut is seeking ASML is seeking an material scientist or chemical engineer with expertise in coating and etching technologies. The advanced process development and flatness competence group within Optical Sensor and Metrology Department, is a group involved in development of metrology and process solutions that is needed to design and manufacture high precision nm flat ceramic structures that hold wafers and reticles in ASML Lithography tools.
