Next Generation Silicon Photonics

In the past decade, silicon photonics has been shown as a platform for high-performance massively integrated optical devices that can be integrated with state-of-the-art microelectronics. The toolbox of integrated nanophotonics today is rich: from the ability to modulate, guide and amplify at GHz bandwidths, to opto-mechanical and nonlinear devices. The explosion of silicon photonics enabled components with unprecedented performance, and opened the door to a vast variety of applications ranging from micro-lidars for self-driving cars to implantable devices for neural activation. In this talk I will review the current challenges and recent achievements in the field of silicon nanophotonics and present recent results.


Professor Michal Lipson joined the Electrical Engineering faculty at Columbia University in July 2015. She completed her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Physics at the Technion in 1998 and held a Postdoctoral position at MIT in the Materials Science Department from 1998 till 2001. In 2001 she joined the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell University. In 2013 she was named Cornell Given Foundation Professor of Engineering. Lipson was one of the main pioneers in the field of silicon photonics and is the inventor of several of the critical building blocks in the field including the GHz silicon modulator. She holds over 20 patents and is the author of over 200 technical papers. Prof. Lipson held several leadership positions in the scientific community including being a member of the Optical Society board and the IEEE Photonics society board. She is a co - founder of PicoLuz, a company specializing in nonlinear silicon photonic components. Professor Lipson's honors and awards include the OSA Wood prize, MacArthur Fellow, Blavatnik Award, IBM Faculty Award, and the NSF Early Career Award. She is a fellow of OSA and IEEE. In 2014, in 2015, in 2016 and in 2017 she was named by Thomson Reuters as a top 1% highly cited researcher in the field of Physics. More information on Professor Lipson can be found at
