Xu Awarded SPIE Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship

Photo of Di XuDi Xu has been awarded a 2018 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, for her potential contributions to the field of optics, photonics or related field.

Xu is a PhD candidate in the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester (USA). She works with Professor Jannick Rolland in the Center for Freeform Optics to advance the state of the art in precision metrology for freeform optical components. “Optics is fascinating with an endless variety of interesting and challenging problems. My training thus far has required me to develop expertise in a range of areas including interferometry, computational modeling, lens design, and opto-mechanics. I aspire to make continued contributions to the scientific community and to give back through active mentorship and outreach,” said Xu.

The Society awarded $293,000 in education scholarships to 85 outstanding SPIE student members, based on their potential contribution to optics and photonics, or a related discipline. Award-winning applicants were evaluated, selected and approved by the SPIE Scholarship Committee, Chaired by SPIE volunteer Jeremy Bos.

Through 2017, SPIE has distributed $5.7 million dollars in individual scholarships. This ambitious effort reflects the Society's commitment to education and to the next generation of optical scientists and engineers around the world.

SPIE is the international society for optics and photonics, an educational not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to advance light-based science, engineering, and technology. The Society serves nearly 264,000 constituents from approximately 166 countries, offering conferences and their published proceedings, continuing education, books, journals, and the SPIE Digital Library. In 2017, SPIE provided more than $4 million in support of education and outreach programs. www.spie.org.
