Bin Ma and Dustin Moore win O.R.A./Synopsis optical design competition
Bin Ma and Dustin Moore have been named co-winners of the 2010-2011 Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Optical Design Competition operated by O.R.A./Synopsis. The competition recognizes excellence in optical design projects completed by students.
Bin Ma is a Visiting Research Associate with Prof. Jannick Rolland, was recognized for his work on aspheric lens design using CODE V in his paper titled, "Design of Lithographic Lenses with Slope Constrained Q-Polynomials," Synopsys (Mountain View, Calif.) said. Applications of Ma's project include ultra-precise projector lenses used to make ICs, Synopsys said.
Dustin Moore, a Ph.D. student in Prof. James Fienup's group, was recognized for his work on a panoramic imaging system using CODE V in his paper titled, "A High Resolution Four-Pi Steradian Panoramic Video System," Synopsys said. The goal of Moore's design is to improve the quality of systems providing 360-degree, interactive video, according to the firm.
The competition honors the memory of Bob Hilbert (1941-2008), former President and Chief Executive Officer of ORA (Optical Research Associates). Bob was a dynamic and respected leader who was actively involved in all aspects of ORA business, from shaping important CODE V and LightTools software features to supporting key optical design and engineering initiatives. Bob had served ORA since 1975, and was deeply committed throughout his career to fostering technical innovation in optics, enabling customer success, mentoring staff, and supporting optics education. He received B.S. and M.S. Degrees in Optics from the University of Rochester, was an SPIE Fellow, and held seven U.S. Patents in the field of optics.
