Goergen Institute for Data Science
Data Science is the centerpiece of the University's 2013-2108 strategic plan. It is investing $100 million in this initiative, including the construction of Wegmans Hall to house the new Goergen Institute for Data Science, and to hire as many as 22 new faculty members in areas in which data science plays a critical role. Several Hajim School faculty members are affiliated with the institute, conducting research in several key areas related to data science.

Center for Biomedical Ultrasound
Engineers from several engineering departments and physicians from our Medical Center work together to understand and develop new methods to use ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, for example, cancerous tumors of the prostate or breast.

Center for Emerging & Innovative Sciences
The Center for Emerging & Innovative Sciences is one of fifteen NYSTAR-sponsored Centers for Advanced Technology devoted to promoting economic development in the greater Rochester region and in New York State.

The Center for Freeform Optics (CeFO)
The Center for Freeform Optics, a joint Industry-Government-University cooperative research center, advances research and education in the science, engineering, and applications of systems based on freeform optics through a dedicated, continuing industrial partnership based on shared value, and promotion of technical advantage leading to a competitive economic advantage for its members. The center's goal is to launch the permanent introduction of freeform surfaces into the manufacturing infrastructure for optical systems worldwide.

Center for Future Health (CFH)
The Center for Future Health is a multidisciplinary research laboratory where physicians, engineers, and scientists from both academe and industry create advanced medical technology on a personal scale.

Center for Medical Technology & Innovation
The mission of the CMTI is to create innovative device solutions to focused clinical problems through a cross-disciplinary collaboration. The program intends to directly effect improvement in patient care and outcomes while promoting a unique education in both clinical care and bioengineering design.

Center for Visual Science (CVS)
In this Center, students and professors from several departments work on understanding the visual system. Our own eyeball, after all, is the ultimate optpelectronic device, taking in light signals and then sending electrical signals throughout our brain. CVS is widely regarded as the world's top center for the study of vision.

Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE)
LLE is a unique setting where scientists study laser fusion, where atoms of hydrogen are heated so fast by a giant laser that they fuse, creating bursts of energy - the same process that powers the sun and other stars. LLE is the largest unclassified laboratory of its kind in the nation.

URnano
URnano offers a unique set of nanofabrication tools for lithography, deposition, etch and characterization. URnano also offers training for faculty, students, and outside researchers to become certified in the use of these tools.

Smart System Technology & Commercialization Center of the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering
The Smart System Technology & Commercialization Center of the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering is a collaborative, industry-led microsystems Center of Excellence for applied R&D and commercialization. The infotonics partnership leverages the collective strengths and resources of large and small regional industries, the State and Federal government, and universities to create economic growth and new business opportunities a highly collaborative initiative among industry, universities and government, is designed as a world-class Center of Excellence in photonics and microsystems.

The Hajim School is proud of its role in the University of Rochester’s Data Science Initiative, which is the centerpiece of the university’s five-year strategic plan and is supported by the Blue Gene Q supercomputer, shown above. A dozen Hajim School faculty members are also on the faculty of the Goergen Institute for Data Science, and are engaged in data-mining social media to detect global outbreaks, creating automated teaching aids, and improving the capabilities of parallel computing, among other key areas of research.
