2014 Graduate Enrollment

Of the 79 graduate students enrolled in the Department of Biomedical Engineering in fall 2014:

  • 43% were female
  • 6% were underrepresented minorities

Start-Ups Based on Senior Design and Research Projects

MonoMano Cycling was a Senior Design project that has successfully turned into a corporation.

SimPore, started by Professor James McGrath, is a company that develops the world's thinnest and most permeable nanoporous membrane.


In 2014, BME students have been named an Academic All-American, a Whitaker Scholar, and an NSF Fellow. Hemo-Box and URDermMates, two Senior Design teams from this past year, won the 2014 Forbes Entrepreneurial Competition.

SimPore and Micropen* won the Center for Emerging and Innovative Sciences' STAR Program for 2013–2014.

*Micropen has been collaborating with BME for over a year on medical balloons that can precisely apply energy to deactivate or destroy targeted nerves. The work started as a Senior Design project and has continued at the Center for Medical Technology and Innovation.
