Doyley Receives NIH Awards

September 19, 2017

Congratulations to Professor Marvin Doyley who has received two awards from the NIH National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.

The first is a successful submission of his NIH R21 application titled "Super-harmonic ultrasonic imaging of the coronary artery." Professor Doyley will collaborate with Professors Qiang Lin (UR Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Catherine Quo (UR Biomedical Engineering) on this project whose goal is to develop high performance tunable transducers for cardiovascular imaging. This will enable the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging to detect vasa vasorum hyperplasia in coronary arteries, a condition which promotes the progression of atherosclerosis and increases the risk of heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths in individuals with cardiovascular disease.

The second is a NIH R56 award to support his research in pancreatic cancer imaging. This project is titled "Surrogate imaging biomarkers for tracking anti-stromal therapy" and will be a collaboration with Drs. Scott Gerber and Bradley Mills in the URMC Department of Surgery. The goal of this project is to develop an ultrasound elastography system to measure shear modulus in small animals, and demonstrate that ultrasound elastography can track drug perfusion and interstitial pressure in established animal models. This information regarding pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cell growth and drug delivery will enable (a) translational research into patient-specific therapies, and (b) assessment of novel approaches for improving drug delivery.
