Absorption of intense light irradiation may lead to detrimental effects (such as laser damage of optical surfaces) or beneficial effects (such as the 3-D printing of oxide glasses, or fs-laser polishing.) In this talk, I will present highlights of recent work on laser damage, melting of debris on optical surfaces, softening of oxide glass particles towards developing a 3-D printing technology for glass, and thermal effects related to targets used for laser fusion, and their relation to isomechanical groups describing elastic, plastic, and creeping deformation of solid hydrogens at cryogenic temperatures. The common theme is transient heat transfer and the generation of thermal stresses. Limitations of this approach will also be discussed.
