In this talk, I will discuss numerical modelling in defense research by describing real-world applications taken from my work at FFI (The Norwegian Defense Research Institute). The primary focus will be on particle methods, in particular Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). SPH, and the related method RSPH, will be described in some detail. Examples of applying (R)SPH to both fluids and solids, will be shown. We will also look at a more unconventional use of particle methods, namely crowd dynamics modelling. Understanding crowd dynamics might be useful both in military and in civilian applications to avoid potentially fatal situations. Finally, I will show one example of how we try to study a complex, multi-physics system using a fairly simple, parametric model when specialized, high-accuracy models are not available to us.
