Jaime Cardenas
Jaime CardenasAssistant Professor
Prof. Jaime Cardenas earned his Ph.D. from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in Optical Science and Engineering. His research was in single air interface bends and waveguide microcantilevers. After two years as a process engineer, Jaime joined the Cornell Nanophotonics Group. He joined the faculty of The Institute of Optics as an Assistant Professor in July 2016.

Marissa Granados
Marissa Granados Baez is a graduate student at the University of Rochester pursuing a PhD degree in Optics. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in 2016. She is interested in 2D material structures and nanophotonics.
Meiting Song
Meiting Song
Meiting is a PhD student at The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester. In 2016 she received her Bachelor’s degree in Optics from Tianjin University, China. Her thesis focused on generation and propagation of self-accelerating beams. She also spent two years of her under- graduate study at Nankai University, China.
Juniyali Nauriyal
Juniyali Nauriyal
Juniyali is a PhD student at The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a major in Instrumentation and Control Systems from the University of Mumbai, India and she earned her Masters degree from The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester.
Yi Zhang
Yi Zhang
Yi is a graduate student at the University of Rochester pursuing a PhD at The Institute of Optics. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering from Zhejiang University in 2017. He is interested in the optical properties of novel materials.
Xiatong He
Xiatong He
Xiaotong is a graduate student at the University of Rochester pursuing a PhD at The Institute of Optics. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Physics from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2018. Her research focuses on non-linear photonics.
Sushant Kumar
Sushant Kumar
Sushant Kumar is a PhD student of the Department of Optics at the University of Rochester. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at University of California, San Diego (UCSD); in 2016. He also earned his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Photonics) at UCSD in 2018. His thesis focused on design of Silicon Chip Contra Directional Bragg Couplers for Side Lobe Suppression. He is interested in design and implementation of on-chip optical devices for multifarious applications including optical communication, detection, LiDAR, sensing, and spectroscopy.

Jiewei Xiang
Jiewei is a PhD student at The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2017. He also earned his Master degree in Physics at The University of Chicago in 2018. He is interested in high transmission and wide-angle color filters based on novel nanostructure.
Jesús Sánchez Juárez
Jesús Sánchez Juárez
Jesús, received his M.S. from Tecnológico Nacional de México Campus Orizaba Veracruz (TNM/ITO) in 2021. His research focuses on decision analysis systems with artificial intelligence techniques. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering in 2014. He is interested in the application of intelligent systems with AI, for the production and detection of 2D materials.

Undergraduate Students

Nicholas Achuthan
Nicholas Achuthan
Nicholas Achuthan is a second-year undergraduate at the Institute of Optics pursuing a B.S. in Optical Engineering. Relatively new to the field, he’s excited to learn about the wide range of applications optics has to offer across many areas of technology. Outside of academics, Nicholas studies piano with an Eastman School graduate student and is a member of the club tennis team.

Sinabu is a third-year undergraduate student in the class of 2022 at the University of Rochester pursuing a B.S. in Optical Engineering. He is looking forward to developing new and existing skills and discovering new interests as he works in the lab.

Evelyn is a current undergraduate at the University of Rochester. She is pursuing a bachelor’s in Electrical & Computer Engineering, which she expects to complete in the Spring of 2023. She plans to pursue a graduate degree in photonics before moving on to a related engineering career in industry.

Frank is a rising senior at the University of Rochester pursing a B.S. in Optical Engineering and a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is interested to explore the properties of novel materials and their applications in the nano devices.
Kelsey Lee
Kelsey Lee
Kelsey is a third-year undergraduate at the University of Rochester pursuing a B.S. in Optical Engineering. She is excited to learn about photonics and its many applications and to find new interests within optics. Kelsey is also pursuing a B.M in piano performance at the Eastman School of Music.
