Prof. Cardenas is currently and assistant professor in The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester. He has a secondary appointment at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He received his BS in Engineering Physics at the Insituto Technologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico in 1998. He earned his PhD in Optical Science and Engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 2005. Prof. Cardenas spent two years in the industry at Digital Optics Corporation in Charlotte, North Carolina before joining Cornell University in 2007 as a postdoc in the Lipson group, where he became a research scientist in 2010. After one year at Columbia University, he joined the faculty of The Institute of Optics in 2016.

Vigorous research program in integrated photonics, photonics packaging, nonlinear photonics, 2D materials for integrated photonics, and quantum photonics.
Research funding from sources such as the National Science Foundation, AIM Academy, AIM Photonics, New York State, and private industry.
Teaching graduate level courses on Integrated Photonics, Detectors, Radiometry, and Blackbody Radiation.
Supervision of 1 M.S. thesis, multiple B.S. projects, and multiple Master’s research papers.
Teaching in summer school for The Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester and the AIM Academy summer school at MIT
