Precision applications such as atomic and quantum timing, sensing and computing and metrology require table- and rack-size laser systems, optics and control resources, relegating experiments to the lab-scale and limiting their scalability and portability. The ultra-low loss silicon nitride CMOS foundry compatible platform is enabling a new class of high-performance integrated photonics that brings aspects of these precision resources to the chip-scale, spanning applications from the visible to infrared (405 nm to 2350 nm), and bringing opportunities to a new generation of scalable, reliable, portable atomic and quantum systems and novel approaches to fiber communications. In this talk we cover progress in ultra-low loss waveguides, ultra-high Q resonators, ultra-low power stress optic modulators, and integration of systems-on-chip, to realize ultra-narrow linewidth Brillouin and injection locked lasers, optical reference cavities, laser frequency stabilization and control circuits, and other functions including beam delivery for atom trapping and cooling. Results at visible atomic wavelengths for rubidium and strontium atoms and AMO and beamline functions will be discussed as well as recent results on rubidium 3D magneto-optic cooling and trapping, precision frequency and phase transfer over fibers, and extension of these technologies to energy efficient, high-capacity, coherent fiber communications.

Dr. Daniel J. Blumenthal

Dr. Blumenthal is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCSB, Director of the Terabit Optical Ethernet Center and heads the Optical Communications and Photonics Integration group. He is Co-Founder of Packet Photonics Inc. and Calient Networks. He holds 23 US patents and has published over 510 papers in the areas of optical communications, optical packet switching, ultra-low loss silicon nitride waveguides, integrated ultra-stable ultra-narrow linewidth lasers, visible light and integrated atom and quantum photonics, optical gyros, indium phosphide photonic integrated circuits, and microwave photonics. He is co-author of Tunable Laser Diodes and Related Optical Sources (New York: IEEE–Wiley, 2005).
