{"id":186732,"date":"2025-05-05T10:13:33","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T14:13:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/senior-design-day\/?p=186732"},"modified":"2026-05-04T09:45:05","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T13:45:05","slug":"in-bed-ergometer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/senior-design-day\/in-bed-ergometer\/","title":{"rendered":"In-Bed Ergometer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>An assistive cycling device to allow mobilization of bed-bound patients in the ICU.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Background and Problem Statement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More than 5 million people are admitted to ICUs in US\/year<sup>1<\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immobility during ICU stays leads to complications<sup>2<\/sup>: including\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ICU-acquired weakness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long-term disability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ICU-associated delirium<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Higher rates of mortality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Longer ICU stays<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In-bed cycling ergometry is a safe and effective intervention for ICU patients<sup>3, 4<\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early mobilization has been found to:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Decrease one-year mortality rates<sup>5<\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decrease prevalence of psychiatric conditions after ICU discharge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improve hyperglycemia<sup>7<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Problem Statement:<\/strong> ICU patients who are unable to leave their beds without assistance may benefit from increased access to mobility; however, the time required for ICU PTs to exercise patients frequently and the cost of current in-bed cycling ergometers pose a barrier to improving patient outcomes. We are tasked with creating a device that allows patients to move through an assisted cycling motion with their lower limbs from bed at a more accessible price point, allowing patients to reap the class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td>Assistive Cycling<\/td><td>The motorized design allows for the patient&#8217;s legs to be moved through a cycling range of motion without using their own muscle power.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Orthotic Boot Foot Attachment<\/td><td>The orthotic boot secures the patient&#8217;s foot into the device and comes in a range of sizes. It can also be inflated to provide a tighter fit.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Lockable Wheels<\/td><td>Lockable wheels allow for easy maneuverability through the ICU and for stability while in use.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Collapsible Design<\/td><td>The legs fold up and the boom folds down to decrease the footprint of the device and make storing it in a crowded ICU easier.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Control Panel<\/td><td>The control panel allows the operator to change the direction and speed of movement and track the speed and time spent using the device.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Adjustable Height<\/td><td>The boom can be raised and lowered to adapt to various bed dimensions and patient needs and allow for easy storage.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>25 ft Power Cord<\/td><td>No need to charge batteries, the 25 ft power cord will easily plug into the many outlets in the ICU.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final
