{"id":56502,"date":"2021-03-17T11:28:47","date_gmt":"2021-03-17T15:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seniordesign.digitalscholar.rochester.edu\/me2021\/?p=65"},"modified":"2022-04-13T11:43:31","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T15:43:31","slug":"flight-capable-aerospace-mirror-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/senior-design-day\/flight-capable-aerospace-mirror-design\/","title":{"rendered":"L3Harris Space Secondary Mirror Positioning System"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hajim.rochester.edu\/senior-design-day\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Team-1024x771.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-381\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Team Members<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"is-style-none has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-list\"><li>Madeline Bedrock<\/li><li>Eli Burk<\/li><li>Daniel Troyetsky<\/li><li>Jessica Zhang<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Project Description<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-normal-font-size\">Optical space telescopes are widely used&nbsp;in&nbsp;both earth and astrophysical&nbsp;observations and&nbsp;play a major role in&nbsp;scientific and national security.&nbsp;Important scientific&nbsp;optical&nbsp;instruments&nbsp;include the&nbsp;Hubble Space Telescope and upcoming James Webb Space Telescope.&nbsp;For&nbsp;optical telescopes to function properly and take clear&nbsp;and accurate&nbsp;images,&nbsp;their&nbsp;optics must be precisely aligned&nbsp;to focus light and minimize wavefront error.&nbsp;However,&nbsp;due to&nbsp;vibrations and acceleration loads during a&nbsp;telescope\u2019s&nbsp;transportation&nbsp;to&nbsp;its&nbsp;final orbit,&nbsp;and&nbsp;due to&nbsp;changing temperatures&nbsp;resulting in&nbsp;thermal strain, the relative position of the optics can&nbsp;change slightly. Even a displacement on the order of microns can have a profound impact on the optic\u2019s performance.&nbsp;Therefore,&nbsp;any successful space telescope design&nbsp;needs&nbsp;to incorporate systems&nbsp;that&nbsp;correct this&nbsp;error.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The goal of this project is to develop a&nbsp;linear reduction mechanism to finely adjust the position of the secondary mirror of a space telescope&nbsp;along&nbsp;the normal axis which intersects both it and the primary mirror&nbsp;to correct for&nbsp;alignment&nbsp;errors.&nbsp;The ability to&nbsp;correct for misalignment&nbsp;will allow&nbsp;clearer&nbsp;and more accurate&nbsp;images to be captured by the telescope and&nbsp;will increase&nbsp;the allowable&nbsp;tolerance of&nbsp;other system components, thereby reducing manufacturing cost.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-coblocks-gallery-offset alignwide\"><ul class=\"coblocks-gallery has-caption-style-dark
