Congratulations to Dr. Juvenal Ormachea, postdoctoral researcher in Professor Parker's lab, who has been selected by the MIT Technology Review as one of the "top 35 innovators under 35" for Latin America. Dr. Ormachea was selected for his work creating a non-invasive method to detect cancer, liver diseases such as cirrhosis, and diabetic foot ulcers. His approach is based on medical ultrasound images generated using ultrasound scanners. More information can be found here. Professor Kevin Parker has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to use optical coherence tomography (OCT) elastography to perform biomechanical measurements in mice, showing the variations in the softness and stiffness of brain tissue over time that are associated with aging and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Co-investigators on this $421,880 project titled "Advanced Brain OCT Elastography" include Professor Jannick Rolland of the Institute of Optics, Dr. Maiken Nedergaard of the Department of Neurosurgery, and MD/PhD student Gary Ge.

Congratulations to Sedigheh (Sedy) Sheykholeslami Poul, PhD candidate supervised by Professor Kevin Parker, who received a 2020 Edward Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in Teaching by a Graduate Student. Established to encourage excellence in the work of graduate students who assist undergraduate instruction, the Curtis Award for Graduate Students is awarded to full-time graduate students who have had significant face-to-face interaction with undergraduate students in the classroom or laboratory. Sedy was nominated for this award by Douglas Kelley, associate professor of mechanical engineering, for her work as a teaching assistant for ME 225, Introduction to Fluid Dynamics (read more here). Fernando Zvietcovich has been selected as the winner of the 2020 Outstanding Dissertation Award for Engineering and Applied Sciences in Arts, Sciences and Engineering. This award recognizes the quality of Fernando's thesis titled "Dynamic Optical Coherence Elastography", and is a testament to his exceptional work as a graduate student at the University of Rochester. Fernando received his PhD under the guidance of research advisors Professor Kevin Parker and Professor Jannick Rolland, and he is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in Dr. Kirill Larin's Biomedical Optics Laboratory at the University of Houston. Congratulations Fernando!

Gary is an MD/PhD student in Optics at the University of Rochester. Under the co-mentorship of Professors Kevin Parker and Jannick Rolland, he currently investigates brain elasticity changes in aging and neurodegeneration using optical coherence tomography. Congratulations to Juvenal Ormachea who successfully defended his PhD thesis titled “Viscoelastic Tissue Characterization Based on Harmonic and Transient Shear Wave Elastography.” Juvenal's public defense took place on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, immediately followed by a closed-door defense session. Juvenal has been supervised by Professor Kevin Parker. His PhD committee was chaired by Professor Jong Hoon Nam (Mechanical Engineering), and included Professors Marvin Doyley (Electrical & Computer Engineering) and Steve McAleavey (Biomedical Engineering). Again, congratulations to Juvenal and many thanks for his hard work and significant contributions to Professor Parker's Medial Imaging Research Group. The Group is fortunate that Juvenal has chosen to stay on as a Postdoctoral Research Associate, we look forward to his continuing efforts!
