Military Service Commitment
Simply submitting an application incurs no obligations or commitments. Your commitment starts once you've accepted the scholarship and swear an oath of office. Students still have up until the beginning of sophomore year to leave the program with no "payback" required, should you find that it is not what you really want to do.
The baseline requirement is eight years of service, at least five of which must be on active duty. This means you can end your active duty after five years and then spend three more in the Reserves, or you can spend a full eight on active duty and then completely sever ties to the military.
The baseline can be modified if you decide to accept additional training after commissioning. For example, a student who decides to go to flight school would not start their eight years until after they finish flight school (which can take two years or more), and all of their eight years must be served on active duty. Each advanced training option has their own requirements.
