Professor Ehsan Hoque from the Department of Computer Science received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for advancing human-computer interaction with artificial intelligence.

Associate Professor William Renninger from the Institute of Optics was honored with the PECASE award for developing femtosecond lasers for medical imaging.

Hussein Aluie, a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Mathematics and a senior scientist at the University’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics, was named an American Physical Society (APS) Fellow.

For the third year in a row, Professor Robert Boyd, Dean’s Professor in the Institute of Optics earned a spot on Clarivate’s list of Highly Cited Researchers.

Jiebo Luo, a professor of computer science and the Albert Arendt Hopeman Professor of Engineering, received the 2025 Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award from the IEEE Computer Society.

Optica named Susana Marcos, the David R. Williams Director of the Center for Visual Science, as the 2025 recipient of the Edgar D. Tiller Award.

Danae Polsin, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and staff scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, has received the American Physical Society’s 2026 Neil Ashcroft Early Career Award for Studies of Matter at Extreme High-Pressure Conditions.

Optica and the Society for Imaging Science and Technology selected Xi-Cheng Zhang, the M. Parker Givens Professor of Optics, as the 2025 Edwin H. Land Medal winner.
