Kathryn Lambright (BME BS student, '26), was recently awarded a Fulbright-Tampere University Graduate Award. Through this opportunity, she will pursue an MSc in Biomedical Science and Engineering at Tampere University, where she plans to specialize in biomedical instrumentation and medical physics.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State since 1946, the Fulbright US Student Programaims to promote mutual understanding and peace between the United States and other nations through educational and cultural exchange. Recipients conduct research, pursue advanced studies, and assist in teaching English communication skills and American culture abroad, while also participating in a wide range of self-initiated community engagement endeavors in their host countries.

Kathryn’s research advisors and recommenders include Benjamín Castañeda from the Global Health and Medical Device Lab, where she is currently conducting research, and Dr. Chia-Lung Wu, in whose lab she conducted research during her first and second years. She also shared that Juliet Sullivan from the Fellowships Office was a great mentor throughout the process, and Dr. John Lambropoulos, another recommenders, was also very supportive.

Kathryn’s current research focuses on applying AI to medical image segmentation for breast cancer ultrasounds, with the goal of improving diagnostic capabilities in low-resource areas. After completing the grant, she plans to pursue a PhD in biomedical engineering, focusing on medical diagnostics.

Congratulations to Kathryn and all Fulbright recipients!
