Six artificial metal-semiconductor nano-materials have been studied using SEM and related technique (BSE/SE imaging, X-ray analysis, electron flight simulation, light microscopy, image processing, particle analysis, etc.). It has been shown that the porous structure of those nano-materials are dependent on both material and fabrication condition. The porous structures can have a very large depth-diameter ratio (in the order of thousand or more), which makes them useful for applications of large functional devices.
The metal gold nano particles bulk GaP substrate, as small as a few nanometers, have been successfully observed and measured quantitatively. The size and the density of such metal nano particles can affect greatly the linear and non-linear optical property of the artificial materials. ?The SEM observation result are in agreement with the measurement of the optical properties of these samples.
The participant of this project would like to acknowledge Palash Bharadwaj and Brian McIntyre for supervision and great help for SEM operation. He would also like to acknowledge Wayne Rasband for developing ImageJ and make it available as a freeware.
