ECE Professor Qiang Lin Receives Inaugural Leonard Mandel Award

Qiang Lin, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering and optics at the University of Rochester, has been named the first Leonard Mandel Faculty Fellow. The award, which includes a two-year, $25,000 stipend, recognizes exceptional achievement by a junior faculty member in coherence and quantum optics.

Recent ECE Ph.D. graduate, Himanshu Shekhar, awarded the Frederick V. Hunt Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Acoustics

Himanshu Shekhar, who finished his Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering here earlier this year, has been awarded the very prestigious Frederick V. Hunt Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Acoustics from the Acoustical Society of America for 2015-2016. Himanshu completed his doctoral work in Prof. Marvin  Doyley’s group, working on high frequency ultrasound imaging. The Hunt Fellowship was established by the Acoustical Society of America to honor the legacy of the late Prof. Frederick Vinton Hunt of Harvard University. Himanshu received one of two Hunt fellowships which were awarded this year for his proposal  titled  “Ultrasound-enhanced drug delivery for treating vascular disease.” He will complete this research in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, working with Prof. Christy Holland.

Rochester ECE students recognized in the Acoustical Society of America’s Student Challenge Problem in Acoustic Signal Processing

Sahar Hashemgeloogerdi, a Rochester ECE Ph.D. student, was awarded third place in the Acoustical Society of America’s International Student Challenge Problem in Acoustic Signal Processing.  Sarah Smith and Michael Heilemann, also Ph.D. Students in ECE, were recognized as finalists in the competition.  The ASA International Student Challenge Problem program reflects the society's commitment to educating the new generation of acoustic scientists and engineers, and was conceived to “give students the opportunity to distinguish themselves by solving a challenging problem in acoustic signal processing.”  Congratulations Sahar, Sarah and Michael!

Jeremy Warner '15 & Aaron Lim '17 IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative award recipients

Congratulations to Jeremy Warner'15 and Aaron Lim '17 for being named as recipients of an IEEE Power and Energy Society Scholarship Plus Initiative award. Recipients of IEEE PES engineering scholarships are high achieving undergraduate students in electrical engineering who have committed  to exploring the power and energy fields through both coursework and career experiences. These students will graduate with the knowledge and skills  necessary to begin making an impact across the power and energy industry. These students are the very individuals who will one day develop new green technologies, build the smart grid and change the way we generate and utilize power.

Rohit Nayak awarded 2nd Place for Best Student Oral Presentation Awards at the 2014 International Tissue Elasticity Conference

Rohit Nayak, a Ph.D. candidate in Prof. Marvin Doyley's lab, was awarded Second Place in the Best Student Oral Presentation Awards at the 2014 International Tissue Elasticity Conference in Snowbird, Utah, earlier this month. His presentation -- co-authored by Prof. Doyley and Ph.D. candidate Prashant Verma -- was titled "Multi-element synthetic aperture vascular elastography for carotid imaging."

Prof. Wendi Heinzelman tests app for donating excess space on cellphones

Wendi Heinzelman, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and our Dean of Graduate Studies, is testing a computer application, called the Green Energy Mobile Cloud, that allows volunteers to donate extra space on their Androids for research. The app was developed by He Ba, an Electrical and Computer Engineering grad student, while doing an internship for UCB Pharma. Prof. Roman Sobolewski will be a visiting scientist at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology in the Republic of Korea

Roman Sobolewski, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Senior Scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, is a visiting scientist at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology in the Republic of Korea through May 20. He is giving two seminars and exploring closer collaboration between our institutions. These visits often prove to be very fruitful. Thanks, Roman, for representing us at Gwangju.

Professors Eby Friedman and Engin Ipek are co-PIs on a new project funded by the iARPA

Professors Eby Friedman and Engin Ipek are co-PIs on a project to leverage superconducting electronics to design the next generation of high performance, energy efficient datacenters. The project, funded by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (iARPA), is a joint effort with Raytheon BBN technologies, Hypres Inc., New York University, Cornell, and MIT.  The project will explore a novel memory solution as part of the iARPA’s Cryogenic Computing Complexity program.
