Professor Stephen Jacobs' Work Featured on the Cover of the Advanced Functional Materials

Professor Steven Jacobs

(April, 2005) Professor Stephen Jacobs and co-workers have published a paper that is featured on the cover of February issue of Advanced Functional Materials. The paper shows that micrometer-sized shaped flakes exhibit brilliant circularly polarized selective reflection colors without polarizers of color filters when placed in fluid-filled electro-optic cell. A variety of shapes can be fabricated from polymer cholesteric liquid-crystal materials using soft lithography. With the application of a low-magnitude alternating current field, the flakes reorient in hundreds of milliseconds and colors disappear. Such LC flakes are interesting candidates for particle displays.
