Introduction

Kodak employs numerous manufacturing processes to develop chemicals and the preparation of acid chlorides from carboxylic acid is a fundamental synthesis process employed there. The reaction of interest is the generation of benzoyl chloride from benzoic acid using thionyl chloride as the chlorinating agent. The reaction produces gaseous byproducts of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen chloride, a strong irritative acid in the presence of water:
